The Juneteenth holiday commemorates much more than the singular anniversary of when the news of the Emancipation Proclamation finally reached Texas. Rather, Juneteenth urges us to remember the histories of Africans who resisted and rebelled throughout the Americas, refusing subjugation thus putting pressure on the Union. Freedom was won because Africans themselves actively fought for their own liberty and autonomy.
Join us for a Fronterix lecture and discussion with local scholar, Jazmine Janay Cuevas, on how Juneteenth came to be through demand of Africans in México, the United States, and their borderlands.
