Loosely based on Homer’s Odyssey, O Brother, Where Art Thou? also references the 1941 film Sullivan’s Travels, about a director’s quest to make an epic during the Great Depression. Our film is set in 1937, where three escaped convicts search for hidden treasure while the sheriff pursues them through the bogs of the Mississippi Delta. Clooney, Turturro, and Nelson play the three convicts who meet Homeric characters like an evil Cyclops, sexy Sirens and historical characters from that era, like Governor Pappy O’Daniel and Babyface Nelson. The period-specific musical score of gospel, blues, country and bluegrass won two Grammys for Soundtrack and Album of the Year. The catchy tune sung by the escaped cons’ Soggy Bottom Boys, the traditional “Man of Constant Sorrow,” was so popular that some of the musicians featured on the best-selling soundtrack undertook a national concert tour called Down From The Mountain. — Leanne von Mittenwald
