Join the Rubin Center and art education students for a Family Day inspired by artworks displayed in Mud + Corn + Stone + Blue exhibition. Visitors of all ages are invited to participate in a variety of playful, student-led art activities exploring materials featured in the exhibition—including corn, corn husks, and clay. In close collaboration with the Rubin Center, these engaging projects were developed by 21 aspiring art teachers as their primary project for the Fall 2024 Foundations of Art Education course.
ACTIVITIES
From Soil to Cloth: Painting with Mud invites children to create textile prints using naturally dyed mud. In Harvest Patterns: Painting with Corn, Carrots and Potatoes participants engage in basic printmaking using a variety of vegetables. In Colorful Creatures: Braiding Animals with Dyed Corn Husks children are invited to create small animals from carefully hand-dyed corn husks. Tiny Frames: Clay Collaging with Nature offers children the opportunity to build frames from sticks and create clay canvasses for collages with natural materials. The Wild and Wonderful Masks workshop is a project inspired by the work of artist Alejandro de la Guerra and encourages participants to use natural and unconventional materials to create their own masks. Corn Cha Cha Cha: Crafting Maracas is a hands-on workshop that teaches children how to create a musical instrument using corn husks and kernels. In Corn to Go: Weaving Bags from Corn Husks students teach children how to weave a purse using corn husks and blue yarn.
