Celebrate with us the opening of Cynthia Gutierrez-Krapp’s solo exhibition Strangers in Our Own Land. Presenting new and recent work, including large-scale glass bead and handmade clay bead weavings, this exhibition honors Gutierrez-Krapp’s artistic journey and the thoughtful explorations of memory, place, and material in her practice.
As part of the Rubin Center’s Genius Loci series highlighting the work of significant regional artists, this solo exhibition presents new and recent work by El Paso-based mixed-media artist Cynthia Gutierrez-Krapp. Known for her evocative installations and hand-crafted objects, Gutierrez-Krapp brings together glass, natural materials, and intricately formed clay beads to create delicate yet grounded works that speak to cultural memory and personal lineage. Her practice emerges from acts of caretaking and reclamation, reflecting how the borderlands hold layered histories—where inherited knowledge and everyday experience take shape through touch, texture, and craft.
For over a decade, Gutierrez-Krapp has engaged in an ongoing exploration of her Diné/Navajo, Mescalero Apache, and Yaqui heritage—histories that were largely hidden from her until midlife. The silence surrounding these identities, particularly in her maternal line, has become a generative force in her artistic practice. Through making, she confronts erasure and trauma, creating space for healing, visibility, and reverence. Curated by Senior Curator Andres Payan Estrada, this exhibition offers an intimate look at a practice shaped by intergenerational resilience, personal transformation, and the profound relationships between geographies and memory.
