As part of the Rubin Center’s Genius Loci series spotlighting regional artists, this solo exhibition features new and recent work by El Paso–based mixed-media artist Cynthia Gutierrez-Krapp. Known for her evocative installations and hand-crafted objects, Gutierrez-Krapp works with glass, natural elements, and intricately formed clay beads to create pieces grounded in lineage, memory, and touch.
For more than a decade, Gutierrez-Krapp has explored her Diné/Navajo, Mescalero Apache, and Yaqui ancestry—lineages long obscured within her family. This inherited silence has become a catalyst for visibility, healing, and repair. Curated by Senior Curator Andres Payan Estrada, Strangers in Our Own Land offers an intimate encounter with intergenerational resilience and the ways geography, identity, and memory intertwine. Supported by the Mellon Foundation Genius Loci initiative.
