One of the first and best high school musicals centers around Elvis-style rock star Conrad Birdie (Jesse Pearson) being drafted into the Army. Unsuccessful songwriter Albert Peterson and his girlfriend Rosie (Dick Van Dyke and Janet Leigh) devise a plan to have Conrad sing one of Albert’s songs in a farewell concert on The Ed Sullivan Show, where he will kiss one lucky fan (Ann-Margret). Of course, nothing goes as planned in this musical based on the 1960 Broadway show. Its familiar songs include the title song, “We Love You/Hate You Conrad” and “Put on a Happy Face”. Lovely Ann-Margret, our special guest at this year’s Plaza Classic, became a breakout star with this film. The opening and closing sequences with her at the center were added after the impact she had made throughout the film. She later starred with the real Elvis in Viva Las Vegas. — Jack Fields
