Director Vincente Minnelli and star Gene Kelly reached their zeniths with this Oscar-winning musical extravaganza. Screenwriter Alan Jay Lerner (My Fair Lady) wrote a story based on the music of George and Ira Gershwin, about a penniless American ex-GI artist who finds love and success in post-war Paris. The luminous Leslie Caron makes one of the great film debuts as the Parisian girl who wins Gene’s heart. Kelly discovered Caron in a Parisian ballet company while doing research for the film, which won the Oscar for Best Picture. Kelly also received a special Academy Award for his choreography of the famous 17-minute ballet sequence, still one of the most elaborate numbers ever put on film. — Jack Fields
