Imagine the excitement of finding a “magic box” full of your grandmother’s extensive writings that speak of her childhood and youth she experienced 100 years ago! University of Arizona author and researcher, Cristina D. Ramírez, happened to find such as magic box. Her family uncovered 750+ writings of El Paso 1906 native, Doña Ramona González’s, who was one of the first Chicana writers of the 1970s to publish their work in El Grito, the first research and literary journal spurred on by the Chicano Movement. Doña Ramona’s writings reveal the intimate lives of people in 1915 from the historic barrio Chihuahuita.

To hear about these uncovered writings, join us for an exciting lecture about Texas historical and textual recovery with author and researcher, Cristina D. Ramirez, Head of the English Department at the University of Arizona, as she talks about her recently published book, A Story of Stories: The Texas Border Barrio Life and Writings of Doña Ramona González (Trinity University Press, 2024). The lecture connects a variety of interests and disciplines: Southwest borderlands history, the Chicano literary Movement of the 1970s.
