- Based on the 1959 novel by Richard Condon, The Manchurian Candidate was released on October 24, 1962…at the height of the Cuban Missile Crisis. The powerhouse plot involves deception, brainwashing, Communism and white-knuckle, edge of your seat suspense. Truly a great film by any standard – terrific acting, screenplay (by George Axelrod), gritty cinematography by Lionel Linden, melancholy score by David Amram and Academy Award nominated editing by Ferris Webster. The late film critic Roger Ebert ranked The Manchurian Candidate as an exemplary “Great Film”, declaring that it is “inventive and frisky, takes enormous chances with the audience, and plays not like a ‘classic’ but as a work as alive and smart as when it was first released”.
