Únete al Departamento de Escritura Creativa de UTEP para un visionado especial de Nuestros Hombres Ausentes (Our Absent Men), un corto documental dirigido por el escritor, cineasta y candidato al MFA colombiano Julio Barrera sobre la maldición de los padres ausentes y la superación de patrones generacionales tóxicos. Ganó Mejor Corto Documental en el Festival de Cine de El Paso, 2022. Después de la proyección, habrá una sesión de preguntas y respuestas con Ser Godoy, exalumna del MFA.

Sobre el corto documental:

El día de su boda, hace más de 60 años, mi abuela, Ligia Restrepo, fue maldita por su madre, quien en desacuerdo por su enlace le condenó a ella y a su descendencia a vivir en el abandono. Cierto o no, el hecho es que en mi familia soy el único hombre, todos los demás, abuelos y padres, sus sustitutos y aquellos que ni siquiera llegaron a serlo, partieron sin dejar rastro, solo una estela de abandono y tristeza. Siempre creí que mi nacimiento había roto la maldición. ¡Qué equivocado! Porque el día que supe que iba a ser padre, no solo tuve miedo, también quise huir y repetir el destino de Nuestros Hombres Ausentes. Pero aquí estamos: mi abuela, mi mamá, mis tías, yo y mi hijo, juntos. ¿Qué paso? Tal vez mi familia luchó secretamente para que yo no repitiera el ejemplo de aquellos que nunca regresaron y así, no repetir la historia y sentenciar que finalmente nosotros ¡no estamos malditos!

Join UTEP’s Creative Writing Department for a special viewing of Nuestros Hombres Ausentes (Our Absent Men), a documentary short directed by Colombian writer, filmmaker, and MFA Candidate Julio Barrera about the curse of absent fathers and overcoming toxic generational patterns. It won Best Documentary Short Film at the El Paso Film Festival, 2022. After the screening will be a Q&A, led by MFA alumnus Ser Godoy.

About the documentary short:

The day of her wedding, more than 60 years ago, my grandmother, Ligia Restrepo, was cursed by her mother, who, disagreeing with her marriage, condemned my grandmother and her descendants to live in abandonment. True or not, in my family, I am the only man. All the rest, grandfathers, fathers, their substitutes, and those who never even became that, left without a trace, only leaving a wake of abandonment and sadness. I always thought that my birth had broken the curse. But I was wrong! The day that I learned I was going to be a father, not only was I afraid, I wanted to run and repeat the same fate as Our Absent Men. But here we are: my grandmother, my mother, my aunts, me, and my son, all together. What happened? Maybe my family raised me to be a man who would not repeat the same pattern as those who left and never returned, and realizing that, finally, we are not cursed!
