Domestic Violence Awareness Month, observed in October, is a time for communities to unite to remember those who have lost their live as a result of abuse, celebrate those who have survived, connect with those who work to end violence and raise public awareness about domestic violence in our communities. Please join us as we seek to raise awareness of domestic violence. Come and hear our speakers and become educated on ways to prevent and stop the abuse. By organizing this event, we hope to empower not only the victims and the bystanders, but to help shift attitudes that perpetuate abuse and to highlight the reality that domestic violence is everyone’s business. Domestic violence has long been considered a woman’s issue, but we are here to tell you that everyone is affected by it.

  • In homes where domestic violence occurs, children are abused at a rate 1,500 percent higher than the national average.
  • Women are most likely to be killed when attempting to leave the abuser. In fact, they’re at a 75 percent higher risk than those who stay.
  • A child’s exposure to the father abusing the mother is the strongest risk factor for transmitting violent behavior from one generation to the next.
  • According to the CDC, 1 in 4 adult men in the U.S. will become a victim of domestic violence during his lifetime.
  • 26% percent of gay men and 37% of bisexual men – compared to 29% of heterosexual men – experienced rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner at some point in their lifetime.

These statistics provide only a snapshot of this violence. What is also frightening is that abuse still remains to a large degree hidden. The victim stays silent because of fear and shame and the abuser wants his behavior hidden. We invite you to gather with us in remembrance and honor of victims and survivors of domestic violence.

We will have a short program and conclude with reading the names of victims of domestic violence who have lost their lives over the past year. Each attendee will be given a candle which we will light to remember those lives lost and to shine a light on the impact of domestic violence.

This is a free community event and all are encouraged to join us.
