A digital star show, an Alien Autopsy, and Twisted Weather are on tap for the Teacher’s Open House. Teachers and their families will have free access to the Museum and the New Horizons Theater all day as the museum education staff show off their new portable planetarium system, STEM based education programs, and much more. Educators are asked to check in at the Tombaugh Education Center on arrival for nametags and teacher packets, along with their museum “passport” that qualifies them for door prizes. Museum Executive Director Chris Orwoll will give an official welcome to the teachers and their families at 10:30 am inside the New Horizons Theater, which will be followed by demonstrations of the new theater planetarium system and the portable planetarium system. In the Tombaugh Center classrooms, from 11:30 until 1:30, demonstrations will include The Awful Truth About Zero-G, Flying Tea Kettles, Twisted Weather, and the infamous Alien Autopsy (fake bodies, real science). Light snacks will be available in the Tombaugh Center classroom for educators and their families. Door prizes will be awarded at 2:00 p.m. in the theater lobby. Free admission is limited to public and private school teachers, and their immediate family, with appropriate ID or a letter from a school official. Regular museum admission will be available to the public. To help museum staff plan the event, an RSVP is requested. Teachers may register online or by email msh.info@state.nm.us.
