Southwest Environmental Center announces trip to Otero Mesa

As part of its Back by Noon series, the Southwest Environmental Center will be leading an all-day tour to Otero Mesa, a biodiverse desert grassland under threat from oil and gas development. Participants will be able to experience the beauty and solitude of Otero Mesa for themselves and learn about SWEC’s two-decade-long battle to protect this place from oil and gas development. Participants will likely spot pronghorn, birds, native grasses, and other grassland species. This is an easy (mostly driving), with an optional moderate scramble to see petroglyphs. Please bring sturdy shoes, plenty of water, a lunch and snacks, sun protection and anything else you might need to feel comfortable in the outdoors. Binoculars are recommended but not required.

We will meet at a central location in Las Cruces and then in El Paso and will caravan from there to Otero Mesa. Carpooling is highly encouraged. Advanced registrations are required, as spots are limited. Registration officially opens for this outing on October 19th. This trip is free and open to the public. For more information or to register and to get meet-up locations, call us at 575.522.5552 or register online at: https://www.wildmesquite.org/node/1307
