401 E Franklin Ave. El Paso, Texas 79901 2nd Floor
The Alliance of Border Collaboratives, together with the Texas Department of Public Health / Office of Border Health will be organizing the launch of a Breastfeeding Welcome Initiative media campaign.
In alignment with the World Alliance of Breastfeeding Action, synchronized efforts to bring awareness to the importance and benefits of breastfeeding and create breastfeeding friendly establishments for mothers and their families, this project will help to provide more comfortable, shame-free areas at Paso del Norte businesses such as shopping venues, libraries, and restaurants for nursing mothers to have the freedom to be away from home longer and patronize businesses in their communities.
Health authorities from Ciudad Juarez, El Paso and Las Cruces will provide an overview of programs and initiatives working in breastfeeding.
Breastfeeding contributes to the growth and development of babies and those who are not breastfed are at an increased risk of infant morbidity, mortality, adult obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, premenopausal breast cancer and ovarian cancer. The World Health Organization recommends breastfeeding exclusively for 2 years as long as it is mutually desired by mom and baby.
