The MLK Youth Volunteer Fair is hosted in honor of the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. The purpose of the Volunteer Fair is to introduce youth to ways they can become actively involved in civic, community, and charitable programs. Local nonprofits and community groups are invited to share information about their volunteer opportunities and internship programs. The event will feature a resource booth fair, hands-on service projects, music, snacks, and prizes. Youth will have an opportunity to participate in hands-on service projects, and learn about volunteer opportunities. Youth who complete a “Service Passport” will be entered to win prizes.
The greatest tribute we can share in memory of the beloved Dr. King is to invite people of all backgrounds to celebrate in his honor by performing individual acts of kindness through service to others. Volunteering on Martin Luther King Jr Day of Service is a great way to teach young people the values the notable civil rights leader stood for and why. Volunteerism is at the heart of Dr. King’s philosophy as he once said, “everybody can be great, because everybody can serve.” His call to action is a challenge for community members to reflect on how they can make a difference: “life’s most urgent question is - what are you doing for others.”
