Join us for “Merienda Talk: Because of Her Story”, highlighting our newest exhibit “Dolores Huerta: Revolution in the Fields / Revolución en los Campos”. El Paso Museum of History Curator Norma Chairez-Hartell will host a conversation between the public, María del Carmen Cossu (Project Director, Latino Initiatives at the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service), and Dr. Guillermina Gina Núñez-Mchiri (Director, UTEP Women and Gender Studies Department) examining Chicanx, labor, and feminist movements both locally and nationally. Attendees will be encouraged to join the conversation and share their own stories of activism and resistance. Together, we look to cultivate a talk that brings together the past and present, echoing the spirit of Dolores Huerta’s vision of community-based dialogue.

With light refreshments.

Merienda Talks are a free ongoing series at the El Paso Museum of History that explore current exhibits through informal conversation with experts. In Mexico, “merienda” is a time to share conversation with friends over a bite to eat. In the spirit of merienda, our talks bring the public and professionals together to discover exhibits through discussion.

“Dolores Huerta: Revolution in the Fields / Revolución en los Campos” shares the compelling story of legendary activist and leader Dolores Huerta (b.1930) and the farm workers movement of the 1960s and 70s. It is a quintessentially American tale of struggle and sacrifice, of courage and victory. The exhibition, which features bilingual text (English-Spanish), explores Huerta’s public life as an activist and co-founder of the United Farm Workers (UFW), and what led her to become a Latina civil rights icon. In her life as a communicator, organizer, lobbyist, and contract negotiator, teacher, mother, her unparalleled leadership skills helped dramatically improve the lives of farm workers. This exhibition will be on display through June 26, 2022

“Dolores Huerta: Revolution in the Fields / Revolución en los Campos” is organized by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service in collaboration with the National Portrait Gallery, Washington, D.C. This exhibition received federal support from the Latino Initiatives Pool, administered by the Smithsonian Latino Center.
