Free event, no RSVP required. Join us after the talk for Q&A and refreshments
Cindy A Medina will talk about Abraham Lincoln and Mexico: A History of Courage, Intrigue, and Unlikely Friendships, a book on the Mexican-American War and the relationship between Benito Juarez and Abraham Lincoln. The Paso del Norte region breathes Benito Juarez history, as Juarez was first exiled to Chihuahua City and later to Paso del Norte (today modern Ciudad Juarez/El Paso) where he continued to perform his presidential duties. Both El Paso and Juarez share this mutual history. Lincoln and Juarez are both well-respected presidents with similar personal histories who corresponded extensively while they were both in office. Moreover, both were president during some of their countries’ most controversial and complex periods. Even today the legacy of their relationship continues: Cd. Juarez has a Lincoln statue, and El Paso has an overdue statue of President Juarez (under development since the 1970s). The lecture will coincide with the Sisters Cities Summit happening in El Paso.
