Get panoramic views which include the Rio Grande, volcanic fields and more. Find (but do not take) Foraminifera fossils which have been around for the past 540 million years. This will be a loop hike of around 5 miles, all on-trail. It will take about four hours. It is a moderate hike with the hardest part being the uphill at the start of the hike. We will take a slow to moderate pace. Go to the Tom Mays unit of the Franklin Mountains State Park. After paying at the booth, drive to the very end of the road, where all the picnic tables are. Bring 2-3 liters of water, snacks and sturdy hiking boots. This hike is dog friendly if your dog has been trained and socialized. Bring doggie bags and water.
