Journey to Old Hachita New Mexico Mining Ghost Town. It is located just west of Columbus in the Little Hachita Mountains. The town was settled in 1875 as a mining camp for silver and copper. Mining operations then moved to Eureka, NM where turquoise, lead and even gold were mined. A high clearance vehicle will be required - 4-wheel drive a plus but not necessary. Pack water, snacks, lunch, hats, and cameras. There are some open shafts which are taped off, however it may not be safe for small children. We will gather to eat lunch together as a group.

Meet across from the Border Patrol Station (just west of Pete V. Domenici Memorial Hwy) on Hwy 9 at 8 AM. The drive is approximately 2-hours long. There will be a restroom stop in Columbus, NM at the historic Coots Hill and site of Pancho Villa’s raid into Columbus, NM. Once you have passed Columbus, you will go 44 miles to “New” Hachita and then south to “Old Hachita”

You will learn about and see the harsh reality of the mining days in Old Hachita and the ways miners had to deal with heat and by the constant threat of Apaches.

By the way, there is an interesting story behind the name Eureka. Come on the field trip and find out.
