This show has adult concepts, and is suitable for young people 13 and up.

Written in 1966 by George Herman and directed by Jim Lupercio, “A Company of Wayward Saints” introduces La Compagnie de Santi Ostinati, a traveling band of actors who improvise their performances using comedy, drama and song. This troupe of players has arrived in town to create a play in the style of Commedia dell’Arte, an Italian comic art form popularized more than 400 years ago. In that style, masks are used that signify the archetypes that are stock characters in Commedia dell’Arte.

Everything is not all right for this “Company of Wayward Saints”. They are out of money, far from home, and at each other’s throats. Their only hope hangs on a wealthy Duke, who promises to pay for their way home with one condition. They must improvise an entire show of his conception.

The Duke’s task is a difficult one: create a play titled “The History of Man” to his satisfaction. Their show, The Wayward Saints, must depict such classic human adventures as the fall of man in the Garden of Eden, the assassination of Julius Caesar, and the return of Odysseus, before portraying the story of Everyman – Birth, Adolescence, Marriage, and Death. It is a fine mosaic of life redeemed by humor and human understanding
