NFL Pro Football player Devon Still accompanied by his five year old daughter, cancer survivor, Leah, will be the featured speaker at El Paso Children’s Hospital’s 2016 Milagro Gala, presented by Bank of America Merrill Lynch on March 18th at the El Paso Convention Center. “From February, 2012 to December, 2015, El Paso Children’s has served 52,785 unique patients” said El Paso Children’s Hospital Foundation Executive Director, Dennece Knight. “That’s one out of every 7 El Paso children. The need for high quality specialized pediatric care is unquestionable. Even now, at this moment, there is a child and their family walking through the door of Children’s hoping for answers for a healthy life.”
Every penny raised at the Gala will benefit lifesaving medical equipment, family care grants and research like El Paso Children’s, National Cancer Institute certified, COG Program (Children’s Oncology Group) one of only 200 in the nation. “El Paso Children’s COG program already follows over 4000 pediatric patients,” said Knight. “Many pediatric cancers today have a better than 85% cure rate. That’s worth fighting for.”
Devon and his daughter Leah had their world turned upside down in June, 2014, when the then four-year old was diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma and given a 50-50 prognosis. Leah’s surgery to remove her tumor was successful but a long road of treatments still lay ahead. After months of treatment, hospital stays and a roller-coaster ride of emotions, Devon finally heard the news he had been desperately waiting to hear, Leah’s cancer is in remission.
Devon and Leah, have become public faces in the fight against pediatric cancer. They were recently honored with the Jimmy V Perseverance Award at the ESPY Awards this past summer.
