Let’s start the New Year’s resolutions off on the right hiking foot! Join us to work up a sweat and burn some calories while taking in the splendors of the Franklin Mountains State Park.

We will be hiking the Upper Sunset trail in the Tom Mays Unit for this hike.

Length: 3 miles round trip

Trail Difficulty: Easy to Moderate. We’ll encounter some elevation gains, with some short steep inclines/declines, a few rocky/rough sections, and great vistas as we walk along the ridgeline.

Meet at Tom Mays Unit –Southern Lower Sunset Trailhead. When you enter Tom Mays, stop by the Visitor Center and let the Ranger on duty know you are part of the hike. This is where you will pay the fee. Take the first sharp left after passing the booth and find a parking space.

Bring: Water, snacks, sturdy hiking shoes/boots; optional: hiking stick, camera, binoculars, a map.

Directions:

From Westside on I-10, take exit 6 & travel east towards mountains for 3.8 miles. Park entrance will be on the left.

From Eastside on Hwy 54, take exit 29 towards Transmountain Rd, travel west 7-7.5 miles through the mountains. Park entrance will be on the right.

If using a GPS be sure to search for “2900 Tom Mays Access Road,” not “Franklin Mountains State Park.”
