Where can you see a Rhino in El Paso? Why at the Sierra Providence Events Center during any regular home game of The El Paso Rhinos Hockey Team of course!

It only took a few minutes to fall in love. Maybe it was all the energy I felt from the other fans. There seemed to be a vibe of “Who cares what anyone thinks, I am going to kick up my heels and shake my groove thang!” The kids were all enjoying themselves so much; it really is fun for all ages. The staff at the venue is very friendly and helpful and the announcer is the best!

When the announcer starts pumping up the crowd it is so much fun to see everyone give their energy out to the team. One of my co-workers said they have attended many hockey games in different states (being a military family), but they enjoyed the Rhinos the most! The arena is small and cozy, and there are no bad seats in the house. The bleachers go up about twelve rows and have back rests. Remember you are in an ice rink and the temperature is a little on the cool side so bring a sweater or light windbreaker, this should be sufficient unless you are a real desert diva, then you might need a seat cushion and something a little warmer to wear.

There is something happening on the ice every minute and throughout the three periods of play they have different contests like: Shoot to Win, Loudest Fan, Kiss Cam, Dance for Your Dinner, Chuck A Puck, 50/50. There are also specials like Thirsty Thursday, and Lucky 7, and events like Rhinos Win, Party on the Patio, Powerplay, Its Your Birthday, and Carry the Flag. With that much going on, the three hour game seems to fly by!

There is a concession stand right inside the front doors along with restroom facilities. I found out that the concession proceeds fund the Ronnie Rhino’s Rugrats Cactus Cup League youth hockey division. (The cost is only $65, they have 2 divisions, 10 & under and 10 & up and the equipment and jerseys are included). You can also wait and see if the Rhinos score 8 goals and that will score you dollar hot dogs and dollar ice cream!

The Rhinos have a great sense of community. At last night’s game they were raising money to help fight juvenile cancer and asked everyone to donate a dollar, and the team members allowed their heads to be shaved in support of the fight to find a cure.

Community Impact-in their own words: The El Paso Rhinos strive to enhance the lives of their community's residents. Through community appearances to local schools and charities, we have encouraged excellence in education and assisted in raising thousands of dollars to help the underprivileged. Each season, the Rhinos make over 120 appearances in El Paso County and look forward to visiting many more organizations in the seasons to come.

Don’t forget there is public ice skating available at scheduled times, (when the Rhinos are not playing). www.elpasohockey.org.

Regular games begin at 7:30pm on Friday and Saturday evenings. There is plenty of parking in the facility’s parking lot for $5 a carload or you can park on the outside perimeter for free.
Now I just have to wait for the next game, so that at the urging of our wonderful announcer we can all yell out-Let’s Go Rhinos, Let’s Go!
