CBS4 and KFOX14 are joining forces for a huge cleanup effort at the Doña Ana Cemetery. Staff members will be at the cemetery cleaning up the grave sites of fallen heroes in Doña Ana County.

We are asking the public to join us on this mission. Together we can make tremendous strides toward making the cemetery the place of honor and respect everyone deserves.

Headstones and graves were covered with overgrown weeds. We are hoping to have more than 100 people working on the site from 8 a.m. to noon.

The cemetery is the resting place of veterans from Doña Ana County who fought in the Mexican-American War, the Civil War and the Spanish-American War. The conditions and the intensity of the work may not be suitable for young children. Supplies needed: Hand tools: Rakes, shovels, garden hoes, pickaxes (to cut out mesquite roots), heavy-duty pruners capable of cutting mesquite branches, pitchforks, handsaws and any other tools you think might come in handy. Battery operated Sawzalls with wood cutting blades. (There is no electrical power on-site so battery-operated saws would be extremely helpful in cutting out the thick brush. Wheelbarrows to take debris from the cemetery to an on-site roll-off Dumpster. Pop-up shades and chairs. Something we can spread out across the work area so people can take a break when needed.

Volunteers will need:Hat, Gloves, Sturdy shoes Sunscreen, Pants, Long-sleeved shirts are recommended for protection from thorns, Water and snacks. Refreshments WILL BE PROVIDED but it’s good to have a little extra since the work is tough and the sun will be hot. Temperatures should reach 77 degrees in afternoon. Directions to the cemetery:

The cemetery is on the southeast corner of that intersection Overflow parking is available at Our Lady of Purification Church. See you there!
